8 things to save the planet

In this section, the members of Sierra Verde will be sharing some of our ideas and perspectives, experiences, progress, and challenges as individuals dedicated to nature conservation and community development. In this regard, we are aware that involvement and taking action in our daily lives, from our respective positions, is a fundamental element. Therefore, in this first entry, we invite you to take a look and reflect a bit on some specific things you can do to have a positive environmental impact.

  1. Cultivate Wonder

Let's preserve that capacity for wonder we had in childhood. Let's protect and nurture that same capacity in today's children, who live under the bombardment of technological development, which brings great advantages but undoubtedly impacts emotional development and the ability to marvel at simple things.

2. Take a moment to consider your impact

Examine your consumption and eating habits: What is the environmental impact of the choices you make in your daily life? Significant changes result from the accumulation of many small, both individual and collective, actions.

3. You have the power to choose where your money goes

Choose who you buy from! Select companies, projects, and initiatives that align with Sustainable Development philosophies: consume brands that minimize negative impacts or, even better, those that have a positive impact on their ecological surroundings. Look for products or services that promote community well-being in terms of the economy, health, access to wealth, personal growth, peace, and truly sustain these benefits in the long run.

4. Being a citizen grants you rights, use them!

Stay informed about public policies. Demand that decision-makers act responsibly on environmental issues. Use the power of social media to communicate with decision-makers and acknowledge them when they get things right; positive reinforcement!

5. Make "Free Animals" Your Slogan

Never buy wild animals. Choose non-extractive activities such as bird and wildlife watching, hiking, and nature photography. Snorkeling or diving is always a better option than sport fishing. Let's think about how many people benefit from catching a grouper, a sailfish, or a shark. How long does that benefit last, and what is the resulting impact on the ecosystem? On the other hand, how many people benefit when a community promotes diving and snorkeling to observe or photograph that same grouper, sailfish, or shark? How long do the benefits of these activities last, and how do they impact the ecosystem?

6. You can help biodiversity from your home

Choose native plants; they produce flowers and fruits that nourish local wildlife. Imagine encouraging the arrival of wild animals to your window, patio, or garden. ✨ Perhaps you'll discover a love for bird watching or planting flowers to attract pollinators (the bees will thank you!). If you have children at home, don't hesitate: their closeness to nature will shape some of their best memories.

7. Your garbage, your footprint, that which destroys the planet.

Let's take responsibility for our waste. We can't continue filling the planet with plastic. We can't keep polluting the soil, rivers, and aquifers. We can't continue treating our organic waste (or other types of waste) as garbage. We have to take responsibility!

8. Share, inspire, inform - 8 things to save the planet

Spread the word. If you think this text can contribute something to someone, share it! Talk to others about these topics, share your perspectives, and let's exchange ideas. And let's enjoy our connection with nature. Despite everything, our blue planet remains a vibrant and biodiverse world.

Bonus Track: As one of the key principles of contemporary environmental philosophy states: "think globally, act locally." This will undoubtedly counteract the overwhelming feeling that socio-environmental issues can produce. Instead, taking action will give you a positive sense of progress, making you feel less a part of the problems and more a part of the solution.
