WE PROTECT
THE ECOSYSTEMS OF NAYARIT AND JALISCO, MEXICO.

The region known as Sierra de Vallejo, is made up of several mountain ranges and includes 2 thousand square kilometers within one of the greenest and most biodiverse areas from western Mexico.

Sierra Verde is an initiative for nature conservation and community development.

It represents a vision shared by people concerned about the global environmental situation. We work to generate a change in the way humans interact with nature.

Context

The health of our planet increasingly depends on the impact of human actions.

The region known as Sierra de Vallejo, is made up of several mountain ranges and covers about

2 thousand square kilometers square kilometers within one of the greenest and most biodiverse areas in western Mexico.

The Sierra de Vallejo is a key area for maintaining ecological functionality.

Due to its proximity to tourist centers such as Puerto Vallarta and Riviera Nayarit, its role as a water factory, climate regulator and biodiversity refuge is a priority. There is practically no hard data on forest health, soil degradation, the state of water resources or the distribution, abundance and ecological requirements of key and/or threatened species. Extensive forest loss has occurred for decades, especially in lower altitude areas. Because of this, it is necessary to design and implement strategies in collaboration with local communities, in order to carry out sustainable and regenerative management of the territory.

Sierra de Vallejo-Río Ameca Biosphere Reserve

The Sierra de Vallejo and its area of influence are home to more than 10 ecosystems: temperate forests, tropical deciduous and semi-deciduous forests, tropical savannah vegetation and coastal lagoons.
Its flora could be the richest in western Mexico.

Strategic
actions

We currently work in the south of the state of Nayarit, in western Mexico, with different communities in the Sierra de Vallejo.

We focus our work on three lines:

Ecological restoration

Ecological restoration is an approach aimed at recovering natural vegetation and original ecological conditions in degraded ecosystems.

Monitoring of key species

The information generated will serve as a basis for the proposal of conservation strategies, and the design and management of possible nature tourism projects.

Education

Environmental education program, transversal to all Sierra Verde projects, to influence the appreciation that people in local communities have towards nature.
